My questions were why and how are different pastries made in different parts of the world. Also, how are desserts made, and with what ingredients.
Desserts are usually the last course, and in the US cakes, pastries, a bowl of pudding, or a scoop of ice cream are common desserts. However in Britain nuts and fruit with wine is their sweet treat. In France cheese and fruit is served, and in China they have tea, fruit, or coffee for dessert. Desserts are different everywhere around the world! A main component of treats though is refined sugar. Sugar played a huge role in the 19th and 18th century and that is why jelly and other sugary sweets are made today. A dessert term that is frequently heard is mousse: which is a sweet dish that is made of egg whites and whipped cream. Mousse is usually prepared cold or frozen.
