Encyclopedia Brittanica
African Popular Music

What I learned:
  • Africa was strongly influenced by American music but out its own twist on it
  • also influenced by carribean and jazz
  • But later the music turned into more of a calypso style
  • In african music, there is alot of percussion
  • in the 50s,60s,and 70s, it was hard to get the music around the world. After that, they got more of the technology and they got to spread the african music through out a lot of countries
  • most famous for rythms
  • Music is part of rituals and ceremonies, as well as just listening to
  • Starting to use more modern instruments with the african rythms
Questions:
  1. What are the specific instruments that Africans use?
  2. How does African music relate to other kinds of world music?

  1. You made some good points here, regarding the evolution of the African sounds. I agree with them because I have found information about the evolution of other types of music, too.
