In this article I learned:
Country started in the 1920s
Has more acoustic sounding instruments. i.e: banjo, guitar, mandolin
In 1960s country rock invented, Elvis brought this on
More rock and roll sounding music was added but still with meaningful words
Lyrics can range from religion to love being lost
One of the most popular genres of music
become more mainstream
began mixing with pop music. i.e: Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, etc
Is this the same in Europe?
Did it sound the same back in the 60s?
Which is more popular, Country Rock, Pop Country, or downright country itself?
http://ic.galegroup.com/ic/suic/ReferenceDetailsPage/ReferenceDetailsWindow?displayGroupName=Reference&disableHighlighting=false&prodId=SUIC&action=e&windowstate=normal&catId=&documentId=GALE%7CEJ2346200806&mode=view (Student Resources in Context. Magazine: Billboard. Article: Country)
On the charts as you can see, country is ranging from country rock to downright country. I know most of these songs and most of the artists but a couple I have not heard of. Country has more of a meaning to it and has a soul and lyrical meaning whereas pop music has more of a enjoyable sound rather than meaning behind it.

  • Haute couture-the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing made to fit the customer.
  • Haute couture is very expensive; therefore, only a few thousand people in the world can afford to wear it, such as celebrities.
  • This proves to show that fashion can sometimes determine your economic standing in society.
  • Because high fashion is quite expensive, many haute couture boutiques are losing money on the sale of their merchandise because many people cannot afford it.
  • Fashion shows are created to show the creations of the new fashions made by the couture designers. These shows definitely help to sell these clothes.
  • The world's most famous fashion shows usually occur in Milan, New York, and Paris.
  • In the nineteenth century people that wanted to present themselves like they were standing economically high in society; therefore, they hired skilled dressmakers to reproduce the original haute couture fashions without paying the actual price.
  • With people paying less money for replicas of expensive fashion, that is how "knock-off" things came to be.

3 questions:
How do fashion shows affect the business of haute couture clothing?
Why are the most famous fashion shows occurring in Milan, New York, and Paris?
How often were the skilled dressmakers hired to reproduce the haute couture fashions?

  • en croûte is a french pastry term which means wrapped in a buttery pastry wrapping
  • For a more flaky pastry, bakers try not to handle the dough as much
  • wienbrod is a term for Danish pastry
  • The usual main ingrediants for a pastry are stiff dough, sugar, salt, fat and some small amount of liquid
  • A fun fact about pastries is that they rise about 10 times more when cooked because the steam in between the shortening (fat) and dough is rising the pastry up.
  • Before the puff pastry is baked it is smoothed with 2/3 butter and then folded and refrigerated, then after it is rolled out. This process is repeated many times.
3 questions that I have after reading this article is where did pastries once start? Another question that I have is what are some traditional pastries that have been passsed down through the years and are still being made?  Also how have pastries changed through this modern world? In my research with the second article i had a question about how long the process of rolling out and refrigerating the pastry would be?

Blog Post #2 (Article)

http://www.school.eb.com/comptons/article-9274273?query=Fashion&ct=
http://www.school.eb.com/comptons/article-200583

  • Fashion is whatever is favored at a certain time by those who are known as "up-to-date".\
  • The word "fashion" comes from the Latin, facere, meaning "to make".
  • Fashion changes from season to season and from year to year.
  • Books, plays, movies, and other events can affect the fashion of people.
  • Kate Greenaway wrote a children's book with illustrations of a girl's unique dress in the book. That book affected little girls' fashion in the nineteenth century because that dress became the style for little girls back then.
  • Little Lord Fauntleroy, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, portrays little boys wearing wearing velvet suits and curls in their hair. This became the style for little boys in the nineteenth century.
  • In the early twentieth century, brightly colored costumes from Paris-based ballets became the style for women in Europe.
  • During World War II, women worked jobs involving much labor; therefore, they wore clothes that would be comfortable for the job. When the war ended, the style for women became much more casual and less formal because of the war.
  • A rise in the economy in the 1970s and 1980s made people focus more on fashion, since they had more money.
  • As techniques for photography and printing improved in the late twentieth century, fashion magazines from Paris were delivered all over the world to influence everybody's current style.
  • In the early 1800s, the most famous influence on men's fashion was George Bryan Brummell because he recombined classic elements of the aristocratic wardrobe. He influenced men's fashion for many decades to come.
Questions:
  • How can one person's style begin to affect everybody else, such as George Bryan Brummell did?
  • How does fashion vary in different cultures, such as French fashion and American fashion?
  • Which cultures followed the "anti-fashions" in the 1960s and 1970s?

- Some outerwear for both sexes include the haik is an oblong peice of material (generally stripped) that Arabs use to wrap around their bodies or heads for day or night wear.  This is similar to the burnous which is a hooded garment also used for warmth day and night.

Background On Music (blog post #1)

What I learned:

- music is an art which is involved or contributes to every human society

- it lends itself easily through words in a song or physical movement in a dance

- has been rewarded with reflecting and influencing human emotion

- music is also shown in radio, film, television, and musical theatre

- the various ways we use music in our society affect human behavior

- schools are now slowly learning to accept the teaching of music

- music is featured in all religions and varies, depending on their beliefs and values

Second Blog Post

Second Blog By: Alaina Gonzalez

My questions were why and how are different pastries made in different parts of the world.  Also, how are desserts made, and with what ingredients.

Desserts are usually the last course, and in the US cakes, pastries, a bowl of pudding, or a scoop of ice cream are common desserts.  However in Britain nuts and fruit with wine is their sweet treat.  In France cheese and fruit is served, and in China they have tea, fruit, or coffee for dessert.  Desserts are different everywhere around the world! A main component of treats though is refined sugar.  Sugar played a huge role in the 19th and 18th century and that is why jelly and other sugary sweets are made today.  A dessert term that is frequently heard is mousse: which is a sweet dish that is made of egg whites and whipped cream.  Mousse is usually prepared cold or frozen.

evolution of stringed insturments

http://www.school.eb.com/eb/article-9105988?query=musical%20insturments&ct=eb

  • Four different types: percussion, stringed, keyboard, wind, and electronic.
  • Paleolithic Period(old stone age): made pipes and whistle instruments.
  • Neolithic Period(new stone age): clay drums and shell instruments.
  • There is no proof of any specific instrument, being the first source of music.
  • Many ancient cities created the instruments we play today
  • four factors have changed basic instruments and made many new instruments with unique sounds. They are, materials, symbolic preoccupations, and patterns of trade and migration
  • Western art uses folk instruments. (banjo, violin, mandolin, guitar, ukulele)
  • Conventional Western thinking claimed that the earliest instruments were slightly modified natural objects such as bones, shells, or gourds. They would play a pitch then change into another complex form to make another instrument.
  • Early humans were sensitive to tones and pitches of sound, just like a dog or cat. This helped them to construct different instruments.

What made early humans want to change the pitch of their instruments and how did the know how to?

Food Culture

http://www.school.eb.com/comptons/article-207291

1. There are many different kinds of foods even though they are on the same contenet and so close to each other
2. Most European countries have wine, beer, or water with every meal.
3. Coffee is part of the desert
4. Most countries have desert after every meal
5. Many different types of deserts
6. There are many types of resturants in Europe, they have diverese foods.
7. Ristoranti in Itlanian means dining place or resturant

Questions
1. How did the the food in the resturants come to have the types of foods in the resturant?
2. Do the resturants have anything to do with what types of foods they have?

Background or Arab Clothing

http://www.school.eb.com/eb/article-14021
Arab Clothing:
-Arab's typically wear clothing that cover most of their body because they use it as protection from the heat, dust and blazing sunshine.  Yet, they still are able to pull off wearing the traditional clothing.
-The garments are loose fitting and cover most of the body, they are normally made out of cotton, linen and wool, but a nice outfit is made out of silk.
-baldachin- the richly decorated fabric with a wrap of gold thread and a weft of silk.
-damask- the source of richly patterned silk fabric.
- Most garment's are based off of traditional styles.
-Chemise or Tunic are very common loose fitting, long-sleeved garments for both men and woman that are considered casual.
-Jellaba- Wide, long sleeves and a long skirt that may be slit up the side and some styles are open in the front like a coat.  That is also for both sexes.
- Some outerwear for both sexes include the haik is an oblong peice of material (generally stripped) that Arabs use to wrap around their bodies or heads for day or night wear.  This is similar to the burnous which is a hooded garment also used for warmth day and night.

What effect does music have on emotions

Here is a link to an article I found interesting:
  • the topic is about a man who studied both music and psychology
  • the man, Henry Theophilus Finck, has written several books on the topic making him credible
  • he went to Harvard University and later to Cambridge in England, making him even more credible
  • he has a book called Success in Music and How It Is Won , that may help if the success has a psychological relation
  • psychology: the science of the mind or of mental states and processes.
  • philosophy: the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct.
  • scholar: one who has profoundknowledge of a particular subject
Questions:
-Are there studies that are researchable that may prove a relationship between music and pschology
-Is there a philosophy element to my question?
-Can I conduct an experiment regarding the 1st question?

1. How has music developed from the 1700's in America to music today.
2. What were some huge factors that affected the path of music.
3. Who were some influential people/groups that affected the path of music.

Classical music dominated the 1700's to 1800's. The classical music took turns throughout the time but I don't know exactly what those were. In the early 1900's, swing and jazz were taking over. The african influence of improvation and traditional music created jazz. In the 50's Rock and roll appeared and commpelled the younger generation of the time. A couple of groups such as the Beatles and The Rolling Stones turned the whole music genre to rock. Around the 1980's Rap and Pop music appeared. It took the easy to remember patterns of rock and focused on the voice of the song.
